Artist Statement:
As a ceramicist, I get to experience the thrill of Christmas morning every week. For when the glaze kiln doors open, I finally come face-to-face with the pieces I have been nurturing along on this wondrous journey of forming static clumps of earth into distinct forms and shapes. I employ the hard and soft slab method of hand building when creating my pieces. Whether draping over a mold or building free-form, the slab method allows me to fashion the clay in a more organic way. I strive for asymmetry while revealing the beauty in imperfection. The clay I use is primarily stoneware, and the textures found in my work are from my own handmade stamps, or interesting found objects. These textures manipulate the effect of the glazes. For me, the glazing process is the most magical step of working with clay. I often layer 2 or 3 different glazes on top of each other to achieve swirling movement of colors. I continue to explore new shapes and glazing combinations to imbue each piece with its own unique personality. Whether used for display or in a functional manner, it is an incredible privilege for my work to become part of people’s everyday lives.
