BIOGRAPHY
Artist Statement:

My interest in photography started at an early age with an introduction to developing black and white film and paper. At present, I work exclusively in color, developing my own film and making my own prints in a darkroom. Most contemporary photographers are greatly relieved to have digital cameras, photoshop programs, and other electronic means to use so that they don’t have film and processing challenges. Only traditional methods excite and motivate me to express what I want in my art. It is rewarding knowing what is and isn’t possible with film and even how to make its shortcomings work to my advantage. I am still learning new creative controls for film processing and printing.

The fast-paced climate of the world often does not allow people the chance to stop and look at their environment. I am fortunate to have a reason through photography to observe some of the world around me and share my impressions with others. I like to find forgotten bits and pieces that make interesting photographs. Something as simple as an ordinary street corner may yield an attractive photograph, when combined with expressive lighting conditions, good composition and an excitement about the act of capturing a unique scene on film. I appreciate the power that creative photography has in portraying the essence of a subject. It is my desire to share with others a sense of wonder and excitement about a historic place, urban or natural scene. Creative use of color interests me as a way of delineating the form of the subject, and establishing advancing and receding planes, in the same way that gray scale tonality works in black and white.

Rather than just serving as a reminder of past experiences, I hope that what I present in a photograph will stimulate the imagination of those who stop and linger. A unique viewpoint or camera angle, unusual lighting conditions, and selection of the desired amount of subject to be represented are all creative considerations. Beyond what can be put into writing, there must be present a certain unexplainable excitement or compulsion to make a photograph at a certain place and time.

Biographic Information:

Kevin is a native of Wisconsin. He officially moved to Los Angeles by train at the age of two months, when the doctor said that he could travel. He didn’t stay away from Wisconsin for long though; he was fortunate to be able to spend portions of his childhood in both states. Kevin believes this early dichotomy of experiences gives him a unique perspective from which to create photographs of interest.

An introduction to the darkroom in Cub Scouts led to his formal pursuit of photography. He graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara CA, where his love of traditional photography methods grew. As well, the study of specialized development techniques during his work for a BPA degree at Brooks serves him to this day.

Kevin lives in the artistic community of Highland Park with His wife Cidne Hart, who is also an artist. They support each other's art careers. He constantly visits galleries and museums to see what is new in the world of art. His work is often characterized as contemporary, fresh and innovative.
