Artist Statement:
Although my formal education focused on literature and science, I have always also been a “student” of the visual and tactile world. I seem to be in search of the foundations of life that are usually outside daily awareness—the whole ecosystem within a canyon, for instance, the energy drive of growing plants, the workings of a brain that is conscious, the incredible journey of evolution that created homo sapiens, the alien-to-us perceptions of creatures who live despite enormous challenge--so much movement in an ever-changing reality. Exploring what I could do with the three dimensions of clay over eleven years in a community studio, I’ve found a peaceful wellspring of purpose and discovery. It’s fascinating how a personality can be revealed wordlessly, through one’s hands; how clay sculpture can be a manifestation of a searching interior life. We can make our questions into forms. Beauty can emerge from mud.
